More than ordinary tiredness
Chronic fatigue syndrome is a long-term illness defined by deep, unrelenting exhaustion that rest does not fix. It is not the tiredness everyone feels after a busy week. For those affected, even small amounts of activity or stress can trigger a worsening of symptoms, and the fatigue can be severe enough to interrupt work, family life and social connection.
The range of symptoms
CFS rarely travels alone. Common companions include:
- Depression, weakness and dizziness
- Headaches and migraines
- Digestive complaints — nausea, IBS-like symptoms and changes in appetite
- Difficulty concentrating, poor memory and confusion
- Sensitivities to light, noise and emotional stress
Symptoms can vary significantly from day to day, which makes the condition both frustrating and easy to misunderstand.
What causes it?
There is no single test for CFS and no single agreed cause. Research points to a combination of contributors, often including a viral infection, prolonged stress or trauma in the period before onset. Because the picture differs from person to person, a one-size-fits-all treatment rarely works.
Why your individual pattern matters
Two people can carry the same diagnosis and yet have completely different contributing factors. Kinesiology helps to tease those factors apart — identifying the stresses, traumas, nutritional imbalances and lifestyle pieces that are unique to you — so that treatment can be prioritised sensibly instead of guessed at.
Given the right conditions, the body has a remarkable capacity to heal. The work is in creating those conditions, one step at a time: gentle, incremental activity, appropriate dietary change, and support for the nervous system to settle out of its protective state.
If this sounds like you
Over 20 years of practice I have learned that what we are trained to treat does not always fit the person in front of us. Every individual needs a program tailored to their own symptoms and circumstances. My approach combines physiotherapy, kinesiology and gut health to address the many facets of chronic fatigue. If this article resonates with your experience, I would be glad to discuss your situation.
