Anxiety is more than just feeling stressed or worried

Anxiety is more than everyday stress

Anxiety is Australia's most common mental health condition, and it is far more than feeling a bit worried. For many people it shows up as intense, persistent fear about ordinary situations — and sometimes as sudden waves of panic that peak within minutes. These reactions are often out of proportion to what is actually happening, yet they feel completely real in the moment.

That is because anxiety is not only a thought problem. Underneath the worry, the nervous system is sitting in a state of high alert — the same fight, flight or freeze response that is designed for genuine danger. When that response stays switched on, the body floods with stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, and physical symptoms follow: a racing heart, shallow breathing, sweating, a dry mouth, a clenched jaw.

What constant alert does to the body

Your body cannot repair and restore while it believes it is under threat. Over months and years, a nervous system that never truly settles wears down natural defences, and anxiety often travels alongside chronic health complaints, digestive issues and poor sleep. The goal, then, is not simply to talk yourself out of worrying — it is to help the nervous system feel safe enough to come back into balance.

How kinesiology can help

Kinesiology works directly with the autonomic nervous system — the part of you that runs the fight-or-flight response. Through muscle testing we can identify the stressors, past experiences, emotional patterns and neural pathways that are feeding the symptoms. Gently bringing awareness to those patterns helps the body let go of what it has been holding, and many people notice a real shift in how settled they feel.

Nutrition also plays an important part. No two people respond to foods and supplements in the same way, but supporting basic gut health can make a meaningful difference to mood — a large share of the body's feel-good chemistry is made in the digestive tract.

Physiotherapy and bodywork

Emotions and subconscious tension tend to store themselves in the body — in the shoulders, jaw, spine and fascia. Skilled bodywork can release that physical holding, which is why physiotherapy is such a valuable piece of the puzzle. My approach brings physiotherapy, kinesiology and gut health together so we can address anxiety from several angles at once.

If any of this sounds familiar, I would be glad to talk it through with you in person.
